"The most romantic city in America," historic Charleston, South Carolina, is a perfect getaway for lovers, seducing visitors with its cobblestone streets, historic churches, delicious low-country dining and upscale shopping. King Street—the city's shopping Mecca—has some very inviting, locally owned stores occupying buildings that are architectural treasures. Thanks to its coastal location, Charleston's weather is temperate—a boon to merchants' bottom lines. Both spring and fall are peak seasons for tourism.

While doing business consulting in Japan, owner Andrea Schenck conceived of a shop based upon the business idea of importing pottery to the United States. She was struck by the Japanese mealtime aesthetic: slow and beautifully presented. Today, the pottery is a hit at Plum Elements, and Schenck has added original art, handmade goods and artful retail lines to round out a unique retail philosophy that encourages her customers "to slow down the pace of life." She offers stationery for writing notes; books for the pleasure of sitting and reading; and handcrafted pottery that will enhance a leisurely meal. Schenck also sells free trade or green goods when possible. "I wanted this to be an oasis and a nexus," she says, "a place to get rejuvenated, where like-minded people could find each other and exchange ideas. It's been very rewarding." To attract customers who might otherwise be intimidated to visit, Plum Elements' price points start out as low as $5.
