Eco-Choice Awards By Sue Marquette Poremba

Biannual awards event recognizing outstanding environmentally conscious products in the gift industry sees first-ever online voting participation.

Twice a year, more than 2,800 companies showcase an extraordinary breadth and depth of design-driven home fashion products and complementary giftware at the New York International Gift Fair (NYIGF). One of the many attractions of the show, the SustainAbility display, is a curated exhibit of gift and home-product items that are either eco-friendly in their material use or production process.

Since 2009, NYIGF has partnered with GREENRetailer to present the Eco Choice Awards—formally recognizing innovative products that focus on sustainability and environmentally friendly processes and materials.

While traditionally voters have cast their ballots for the winners on the show floor, this summer, for the first time, voting moved online. Taking into account the commercial viability of the products along with their creative use of recycled or recyclable elements, voters chose between 24 finalists for winners in three categories: most innovative; most sellable and most creative use of materials.

The competition’s first ever online balloting was very well-received and a record number of votes were cast,” said Christian Falkenberg, NYIGF director and GLM vice president, of the 7th semi-annual event.

“As consumers become increasingly aware of the marriage of form and function, great green goods that are functional as well as beautiful deserve to be recognized. We’re excited to be a part of these awards and impressed by the stellar quality of the candidates every time,” said Patricia Norins, publisher of GREENRetailer, co-sponsor of the awards. “This year’s response to our move to online voting has also been great,” she added.
