Shelf Improvement By Becky Tyre

Need new display shelving on a budget? Here’s where to look!

Stacked table shelves afford more flexibility in display options as compared to other shelving units. The various levels allow for segmenting within the department. A focal wall like this dramatic one needn’t bite into your merchandising budget. Thrift store furniture will work just fine.

Here’s what to do

Measure the width of the display wall. Decide how many tables are needed to fill the space. Depending how high you decide to go, you will need tables that fill a total width equal to 2.5 to 3 times that measurement. Use larger, deeper tables for the base.

Look for sturdy tables with interesting features and unique legs. Don’t worry if you have different styles. They will appear cohesive once all tables are painted the same color. Upper shelves can be made from tables that are cut in half, lengthwise, and hung with shelf brackets.

Table Types

What sorts of tables qualify? Consider: coffee tables; night stands; desks; end tables; piano benches; vanity stools, sofa and dining tables.

Helpful Hints

  • Secure load-bearing shelves by locating wall studs for anchoring.
  • For a dramatic contrast, use white shelves on a bright or dark wall or the other way around.
  • Some table finishes may need to be primed before painting.
  • Replace handles or drawer hardware with knobs or display hooks.
  • Install rope lighting under the apron of the tables if additional light is desired. To conceal, zip-tie the cords to the backs of the table legs.
  • Measure precisely before cutting legs and when attaching brackets to the wall.
  • Have some wall paint on hand for touch-ups.
