Maxine H. Burton, President and Founder of burton + BURTON (Bogart, GA), was recently named as one of thirty influential leaders who have benefited from a University System of Georgia (USG) education.

Other honorees include former President Jimmy Carter, author Flannery O’Connor, Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue, journalist Charlayne Hunter Gault, and Bank of America President and CEO Kenneth Lewis. Burton and the other nominees were recognized recently as part of the 75th anniversary celebration for the University System of Georgia. Mrs. Burton is an alumna of Gainesville State College (1969-1970) and the University of Georgia (1972 & 1978).

The University System of Georgia is comprised of a unified system of 35 Georgia public universities and colleges that are governed by a single Board of Regents appointed by the governor. Chancellor Erroll B. Davis Jr. said the honorees were representative of some of the “lives transformed by public higher education”. Davis’ comment came during a presentation recently to the Board of Regents outlining milestones of the System’s first three-quarters of a century.

Today the System’s 35 institutions serve over 260,000 students. A study in 2006 put the System’s annual economic contributions to the state at $23.3 billion.

“The System’s success is based upon the state’s wise and continued investment in improving the lives of Georgians through accessible, affordable public higher education,” Davis said.

Maxine Burton said, “I’m honored to be a part of a list that includes some of the best and brightest business leaders, artists, journalists, and politicians of our generation.
