Arlington, MA – Sales may be flagging at La Ladybug Boutique in Arlington center, but owner Kathleen Keady is trying to stay upbeat despite the deep economic recession. “Residents of Arlington are very conscientious,” says Keady, whose five-year-old gift shop is located at 3 Medford St. “The downside is that sales have declined. The upside is that people are making a point to support local businesses. They’re coming in to check that I’m hanging in there.”

With the stock market at its lowest point in more than a decade and the national unemployment rate climbing past eight percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Arlington businesses are feeling the pinch. Local retailers say they hope Arlingtonians continue to appreciate their role in the community.

“Our little businesses provide employment for local people,” says Barbara Walsh, owner of Porch & Wardrobe, 23 Mystic St., a consignment women’s clothing and gift shop. “I try to carry locally made products and give back to our community,” she adds. With 75 percent of her sales coming from resale items, Walsh says business is slow but steady and reports a slight increase this year over January 2008. She’s busiest, however, accommodating clients seeking to sell items on consignment, rather than with those looking to buy.

The Arlington Chamber of Commerce is encouraging support for independent businesses with a Local First initiative set to launch this spring. More than a year in the making, Local First will replicate similar shopping initiatives in Cambridge and Somerville where retailers have reported positive gains from participation. Building on the success of its Shop Arlington First gift certificate program, Chamber Executive Director Michèle Meagher is optimistic that Local First will help drive sales numbers. “Every time you spend a dollar, you are voting. You can make a difference,” says Meagher, who characterized some retailers as “treading water” following a tough start to the year.
