Fifteen years ago, High Pines resident Mary Louise Young was going through a divorce and was in dire need of a positive distraction to help her cope.

So she got a friend to teach her a new hobby: Jewelry making.

Young had always loved jewelry since she was a little girl so she figured it might be something she’d enjoy.

She was right.

She found stringing beads and wire wrapping to be a great escape and something she was actually good at. So good, that it launched a whole new career and her company, Mary Louise Designs, was born.

Today, celebrities — from Beyoncé to the models in this year’s Sport Illustrated swimsuit issue to Burn Notice’s Gabriella Anwar — wear her handmade designs.

Young’s creations are mostly made out of silver and dipped in 22 karat gold.

She makes necklaces, earrings and bracelets infused with her Lebanese ancestry and the Malibu lifestyle.

Young lived in Malibu for many years until she got divorced.
