When it comes to wishing a friend a happy birthday, many people, of a certain age at least, simply post something on Facebook. If they want to put a little more effort into it, they might send an animated or customized e-card.

The greeting card industry is facing the digital and social media era. But Fairfield’s Papyrus, the retail chain that sells birthday cards, thank-you notes, wedding invitations and other stationery and small gifts, believes it can endure.

Founded more than 60 years ago, Papyrus began as a stationery wholesaler before opening its first store in Berkeley in 1973 – located in the same small shopping center as the first Peet’s Coffee & Tea store.
