Big Bear Lake, CA – Jeannie Houston Antes is an artist, a wife, a mother and a business owner. Of all those hats she wears, it’s the business owner chapeau she never thought she’d wear.
“If I’d had my way, I’d probably still be working at LeRoys,” says Antes, who celebrates 25 years as the owner of O Koo Ran Sept. 1. “I really loved working for David and Monique.”
It was Antes’ job at LeRoy’s, a local ski and snowboard apparel shop, along with a brief stint in college that introduced her to the world of fashion. But it was her father, John Houston, who encouraged her to open her own business. Houston financed his daughter to open a store and Antes decided immediately what she wanted it to be—a unique fashion boutique. “I thought Big Bear needed more cool clothes, more contemporary clothes,” Antes said. “People were really surprised when I first opened. They said ‘are you kidding me, these will never fly.’”
