O. Libby Lumpkin to Cover Collecting Contemporary Art

(LAS VEGAS) –– Las Vegas Design Center at World Market Center Las Vegas will welcome the Consulting Executive Director of the Las Vegas Art Museum, O. Libby Lumpkin, Ph.D., on Friday, October 3, 2008.

Dr. Lumpkin’s talk, “Collecting Contemporary Art,” will take place from 10-11:30 a.m. during the monthly First Friday at Las Vegas Design Center seminar room (C-316) of World Market Center’s Building C, 475 South Grand Central Parkway in Las Vegas.

Originally from Texas, Lumpkin became a Fellow of the International Institute of Modern Letters in Las Vegas, Nevada in January 2005. She is an art historian, author, editor, critic, and curator engaged in developing a graduate program in design for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).

The founding curator of the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art in Las Vegas, Lumpkin has served as director of the Museum Studies Program at California State University Long Beach, as assistant professor of art history at the same university, as visiting professor of art theory at Yale University, visiting lecturer on visual and environmental studies at Harvard University, visiting professor of Theory and aesthetics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, visiting lecturer at Umeå University in Umeå, Sweden and visiting professor of modern art history at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. She also has served as assistant professor of art history and curator of the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery at UNLV, where she organized exhibitions of one-person shows by Amy Adler, Tim Gardner, Todd Hebert and other contemporary artists.

Lumpkin’s books include “Deep Design: Nine Little Art Histories,” “Ingrid Calame” and “Jean-Michel Basquiat, War Paint.” She edited and produced the catalogues for the Bellagio Collection and has authored numerous critical essays on contemporary art and design. Dr. Lumpkin was a contributing editor of Art Issues magazine of Los Angeles and is a regular contributor to Artforum of New York and Frieze of London.

Lumpkin earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in art history at the University of Houston, her Master of Arts degree in art history at the University of Texas at Austin, and her doctorate at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. She worked as a teaching associate at UNLV. She is currently working on a catalogue for the Martin Mull exhibition at Spike Gallery in New York and is organizing a biennial exhibition for the Washington Project for the Arts at the Corcoran Museum in Washington, D.C.
