Oconomowoc, WI – When Curious Chef® set out to design their unique line of children’s cooking utensils, they never imagined it would be just as popular with adults as it is with budding young chefs. The children’s cooking line was introduced in the spring of 2009 and was primarily marketed as real kitchen tools designed for children. “We saw that there were no kitchen tools in the market that met the unique needs of children,” recalls John Wilde, President of Curious Chef. “Everything that was available was not designed for a child’s grip, was not safe or was more of a toy than an actual working kitchen utensil,” he adds.
While the products realized much success in the growing kids cooking market, the Curious Chef® team was thrilled to discover that adults were also utilizing the utensils. “One unexpected target audience that has started to emerge is adults,” Wilde notes. Specifically the Curious Chef® line is resonating with individuals with special needs. “Because of the ergonomic and safety features designed into each of our products, we have had many individuals with physical limitations contact us for more information and in many cases to make a purchase,” Wilde reports.
One such individual is Sara Pennymoney from Australia. Pennymoney, age 44, suffers from Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. The condition causes numbness and loss of sensation in her hands and fingers, a tremor in her right arm and loss of coordination. According Pennymoney MS greatly reduces her independence and makes tasks such as cooking, difficult as well as dangerous. She notes that her symptoms “resulted in a lot of knife cuts.”
This led Sara on a journey to find tools that would not only be safe, but also allow her to cook with independence. “I was looking specifically for a knife that would cut through almost anything, except my fingers,” she notes. “I was watching TV one night when I saw a children’s master chef cooking show and thought, they must use some kind of safe knives for children. To my amazement, they didn’t. This led me to the internet to search for safe kitchen knives. Surely there was someone who thought about children’s safety.”
Her journey ended at the Curious Chef® website. “I looked at the website and discovered that they had exactly the type of product I was looking for and more. A whole range of tools dedicated to children’s cooking and safety,” she recalls.
Sara has found that the knives have given her back her freedom in the kitchen. “I bought a set of three knives as well as a number of other products and have been using them daily, ever since. It has improved my entire kitchen experience. I know I can cut something without cutting myself and I haven’t found anything that the knives can’t cut. Now I can be independent and safe.” In addition to the kitchen knives, Pennymoney has found the Curious Chef® measuring cups and spoons useful. “I find them particularly helpful in reducing spillage with my tremor,” she adds.
Pennymoney’s story mimics that of many other adults who have been using Curious Chef® tools. Some report the large sturdy handles and button grips make them easier to grasp, while others indicate that the bold color-coded numbers make the measuring cups effortless to read. This has been especially helpful for people with visual impairments. “We hear about individuals who are blind and can now safely cut food because of our knives, as well as stories about adults who are just happy not to put on reading glasses to use our measuring cups and spoons,” notes Wilde. “We are delighted that we can bring Curious Chef® to another segment of the marketplace while giving them the freedom and independence to enjoy the gift of cooking,” he replies.
