NY NOW Reports Outstanding Winter 2015 Market

Reflecting an uptick in the economy – and despite blustery winter weather – the recently concluded NY NOW®, the Market for Home + Lifestyle was highly successful, with strong attendance, brisk business and record-breaking sales for many exhibitors. The winter 2015 edition of NY NOW ran January 31 through February 4 at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.

“NY NOW presented attendees with an outstanding market for design-driven, stylish and sophisticated product, and exhibitors were delighted with the brisk pace of order-writing,” said Randi Mohr, NY NOW co-director and vice president, “Our attendance this winter increased from winter 2014, and was on par with summer market levels, with buyers from all 50 states and 80+ countries in attendance. ”

Among NY NOW’s 2,800 exhibitors, the winter edition featured a surge of new resources, with 150 companies returning from a Market absence and nearly 400 exhibitors making their Market debut. First-time HOME Collection exhibitor Alaina Young, creative director at Q Squared, enthused, “This is our first show with NY NOW, and it totally exceeded our expectations. It has been such a positive experience, and has given us so much exposure. At NY NOW we don’t feel like we are selling, we feel like we are sharing experiences and inspiration. We feel like a brand at NY NOW, not a commodity.”

Many vendors reported not just a dramatic increase in order-writing but also in the quality of the buyers. “Opening day was the single best day we’ve had since we debuted here three years ago,” said HOME Exhibitor Garrett Childers with Emporium Home, “Since then, we’ve noted a marked increase in designer buyers and the opening up of those designer budgets. This show, we had great visibility and saw very robust traffic. NY NOW put us on the map. We are happy to be here and to stay here.”

Accent on Design® exhibitor Mike Arnot, president of Owen & Fred echoed those sentiments: “In just one day here at winter 2015 market, we exceeded all of our sales at the August 2014 show,” he said, “NY NOW is critical to our businesses success. We couldn’t imagine building business without this opportunity to speak to everyone. It has been a great show.”

A snowstorm on the Monday of the Market seemed not to deter attendees who delivered strong sales and attendance. LIFESTYLE exhibitor Bobby Morrison, director of enterprise systems and services for Rifle Paper Co. reported a record-breaking show with steady traffic, while Anna Rabinowicz, owner/creative director of HOME exhibitor ANNA New York by Rablas reported that the “energy of NY NOW is contagious. NY NOW is the most amazing of all the shows we exhibit at. We see the most customers here. The energy is exhilarating.”

Beyond exhibits, a comprehensive slate of more than 30 educational seminars delivered business success strategies on a variety of topics including social media, marketing best practices, design trends, visual merchandising and more. Three “Only in New York” events showcased the cultural strength and vibrant nightlife of the Big Apple. They included NY NOW’s popular “Night on Broadway” featuring the musical HONEYMOON IN VEGAS, Gift for Life’s annual industry fundraiser, and discounted museum admission during Market Week.

The market also featured recognition of innovative product design through category-specific award programs: Baby + Child Best New Product Awards; Tabletop + Gourmet Housewares Best New Product Award; and the Personal Care + Wellness Best New Product Award. As part of Home Textiles Market Week®, awards also were presented in the Home Textiles Best New Product Awards program. From 20 winners in these four categories, popular voting deemed Innobaby Stainless Bottle and Aqua Heat Warming Pod as “Best of LIFESTYLE” and Q Squared NYC for its Hampton Toile “Best of HOME.”

Accent on Design® exhibitors competed for two sets of product design awards: Accent on Design® Awardsjudged by design professionals and Bloggers’ Choice Awards decided by online influencers. In addition, the New York Metro chapter of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) identified their “Best of the Best” suppliers in seven categories; and New York City’s International Furnishings Design Association recognized seven exhibitors with IFDA Selects Awards.
