Store provides taste of what's made around Jamestown

Jamestown — With the possible exception of some T-shirts, nothing at Susan Stringer's shop is made in China.

In fact, very little of what she sells is made outside of a 30-mile radius of her store in Jamestown.

The Soap Lady, as the name suggests, carries a variety of soaps, lotions and other bath products made by Stringer herself. But the small shop is also a repository for locally made walking sticks, jewelry, pottery and other handicrafts. Read more...

Smith's House of Soap doing it the old-fashioned way

Yankee Hill -- Smith's House of Soap is just that, a solar-powered house with a spring-fed well situated on 62 forested acres off Big Bend Road. It is also the place Donna Smith and her husband, Larry, call home.

"Our business is not located out of a shop; it's in our home. Although, we usually just call it the kitchen," said Smith.

Since 2004 Smith has been creating her "cold process" soaps using natural vegetable oils, herbs, spices, color pigments and essential and fragrance oils, filling her kitchen with the scent of lavender, vanilla rosemary, sandalwood and lemon grass. Read more...

Tribe uses native plants in spa products

Creosote bush, the fragrant, yellow-blossoming bush that covers Valley mountainsides, is a key ingredient in a new line of spa products developed by the Gila River Indian Community.

Known to members of community by its Pima name, shegoi, creosote has traditionally been used in herbal teas, healing balms and even to cure ailments in animals, said Belen Stoneman, spiritual healer at Gila River's Aji Spa at Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort. Read more...
