Puppy love

Mini chocolate cupcakes. Cinnamon rolls. Peanut butter cups.

But the baked goods sitting on the counter of the Pooch Barkery in downtown Ayer aren't meant for the human palate.

If you bite into those yogurt-covered, sprinkled pretzels, you'll taste garlic and chicken. The donuts - cheddar and bacon. And those tortes? They're turkey-flavored. Read more...

Fido first: Pet boutiques bucking trend

The economy hasn’t gone to the dogs yet — or at least not to Fido’s kibble.

Despite a sagging stock market and signs of belt-tightening throughout the retail sector, Boston’s four-legged friends are still getting their preppy collars, organic treats and spa treatments. The news is good for area pet boutiques, which have thrived in recent years.

“My business is four years old and is still continuing to grow month to month over last year,” said Jeff McKee, owner of The Barking Cat in Salem. “I think what it comes down to is a cutback in terms of quantity? Possibly, but a cutback in quality? No.” Read more...

Pinching pennies? Not these proud pet parents

posted in:

Rosemont, Ill.—Emilie Wilson's menagerie includes 15 ferrets, two dogs and four cats, including a hefty gray feline named Tonie Stewart who rides in style inside a pet stroller during family outings.

Wilson spent $300 on Christmas gifts for her brood last year and figures she'll exceed that sum this year. And despite the recession-like economy, the suburban Chicago woman has no plans to scale back pet presents anytime soon.

"I couldn't care less if there's anything under the tree for us, as long as there's something for Tonie," she said.

Retailers may be worrying about the possibility of the worst fourth quarter in generations, but those in the pet products industry are finding themselves in a veritable oasis among much of the gloom of American business. Companies that sell everything from organic dog treats to couture-inspired pet toys say business is up even as economic indicators show shoppers are pinching pennies during one of the worst downturns in decades. Katonah's merchants go to the dogs

posted in:

Katonah, NY — The early morning commuters pause on their way to the Metro-North each weekday at Steger's Paper Mill in Katonah to read the paper, shoot the breeze with owner Troy Steger - and to give a biscuit and a quick pat to his chocolate Lab.

Gabby is so used to the attention from her "cronies," as Steger calls them, that she has to be roused for her treats. "They'll say, 'Gabby, wake up. Your biscuit's here,' " he said.

The scene, which evokes an old-time general store complete with dog paws hanging off the front porch, isn't uncommon in Katonah.

The village, with an abundance of sole proprietorship shops on a quaint Main Street, is a dog haven. More than a half-dozen retailers have resident canines. Read more...
